SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros clinched a 4-2 victory over the SMU Mustangs in the first day of the USD Invitational. San Diego is currently ranked at No. 44 in the nation and, with today's win, holds a record of 6-3. The No. 46 Mustangs drop to 7-5.
Due to inclement weather and wet conditions on the courts, the match was decided by singles. Emma Murphy, who currently ranks at No. 47 in the nation, took a victory in the No. 1 spot over SMU's Svetlana Kouzmenko by scores of 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 2 spot, Jenny Brown defeated Natalia Bubien 7-5, 7-5. Helene Lindstrand dropped her match at No. 4 singles to Kristen Reid (4-6, 4-6).
The match was briefly interrupted due to rain, but upon return Lauren Perl finished her No. 3 singles third set to claim victory over Georgiana Marta (2-6, 6-3, 6-1). Brittany Reitz won in three sets over Brooke Rambally (7-6, 6-1, 6-1) while USD's Sophia Vogt dropped her match at the No. 6 spot by scores of 7-5, 6-1.
In other first day action, the USF Bulls defeated the St. Mary's Gaels by a score of 4-1 in a match that was also decided by singles.
Saturday's matches include a 9:00 a.m. contest between St. Mary's and SMU and a 1:30 p.m. contest between the host Toreros and USF.
