ETSU Edges LMU in Singles Action

March 11, 2006

Los Angeles, Calif. - After a crazy week of rain and rescheduled matches, 60th-ranked Loyola Marymount came up on the wrong end of a 4-2 postponed match with East Tennessee State Univeristy Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions and Buccaneers were scheduled to play Friday at the Manhattan Beach Country Club, but inclement weather forced the teams to squeeze in just the singles portion of the match Saturday morning.

The Lions got two big straight set wins from Pavla Mesterova (No. 1) and Sladjana Kos (No. 3).

"Pavla and Sladjana both played really well today," Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.

Three Lions, Robyn Baker (No. 2), Maja Sundac (No. 5), and Erin Ivey (No. 6), had first set wins over their Buccaneer opponents. But ETSU stepped it up and took each of those matches to three sets, winning them all in the end.

"We started those three matches off well and had our chances to win today," Sanchez said. "We just couldn't change the momentum in those three-set matches."

The Lions have had a whirlwind week full of schedule changes due to the inclement weather. It began Tuesday at 70th-ranked Sacramento State, where rain forced the match indoors. The Lions returned to Los Angeles and cancelled their match with Santa Clara for Saturday due to the forecasted rain. When the ETSU match was rained out Friday, the two teams were able to sneak in the singles action this morning in between rain showers.

LMU will next compete in a tournament in Newport Beach next weekend. The tournament will be played at the Balboa Bay Club.
