March 19, 2006

Newport Beach, Calif. The Lions traveled across town today to the Balboa Bay Tennis Club to compete in a tennis doubleheader. Four ranked teams competed at the tournament in Newport Beach, Calif. 75th-ranked Loyola Marymount University took on 42nd- ranked University of Nebraska and 57th-ranked Ohio State took on 71st ranked Washington State.

The Lions faced tough competition in 42nd-ranked Nebraska. The Huskers started off strong by taking the doubles point. The Lions put up a fight and were up at the No. 2 spot but due to the format of the tournament play was not completed.

In Singles play Loyola Marymount did not finish play at the No. 1, 3 and 4 spots. In all three unfinished matches the Lions were competing strongly with 42nd- ranked Nebraska. The Huskers pulled through at the No. 2, 5 and 6 spots and gained wins over the Lions.

Later in the day the Lions took on No. 71 Washington State University. In close doubles matches the Lions fell at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Patrycia Hubl and Erin Ivey fell to Amy Toth and Maria Ring of Washington State 8-6. Sladjana Kos and Maja Sundac fell to Washington State's Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein Van de Ven match 8-4.

In Singles action the cougars managed to gain wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots thus gaining the 4-0 victory over the Lions. Again, due to the format of the tournament Loyola Marymount's Pavla Mesterova, Sladjana Kos and Patrycia Hubl did not finish play at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.

The Lions Head Coach Jamie Sanchez says, "this weekend was a good opportunity for us getting to play ranked teams at a neutral site. Playing two matches in one day was tough but it will prepare us for upcoming conference play."

The Lions next match will be their first taste of conference play. Loyola Marymount will travel to Malibu, Calif. to take on 14th-ranked Pepperdine. The match will be at 1:30 PM.
