Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team competed against WCC opponent Portland. The Gaels defeated the Pilots by a score of 7-0. This marks the fifth time this season that the Gaels have blanked their opponent. Saint Mary's improved to 12-1 on the season, 7-0 at home and 6-0 against WCC opponents.
The competition got underway with doubles matches. The Gaels swept doubles today. Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath won their doubles match 8-4. Femke Strijbis and Nienke Strijbis won their match 8-3. The pair improved to 9-1 in doubles matches on the season. Stef Ordoveza and Marah Calvo won their match 8-5.
With the Gaels up 1-0 the singles matches got under way. Femke Strijbis won her match 6-0, 6-2. She has won five of her last six singles matches. Erin Young gave the Gaels a 3-0 lead when she defeated her opposition by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Marah Calvo put the Gaels on top 4-0 when she won her match in straight sets. She won the match 6-3, 6-3. She improved to 13-0 in singles play this year. She has won 11 straight matches in two sets.
The Gaels had won the match as they led by a score of 4-0. Nienke Strijbis finished up her match giving the Gaels their fifth point. She won her match 6-2, 6-0. She has won three straight singles matches.
Jessica Haoth competed in her first singles match in over 20 days. The junior won the first set 6-1. She dropped the second set 5-7 and went on to win the match in a third set tiebreaker. She has won eight of her last 10 singles matches.
Aude Lambert gave the Gaels the sweep as she won her match in two sets, 7-5, 7-5. She has won 12 of her last 14 singles matches.
The Gaels return to action on Sunday when they face WCC rival Santa Clara. The match begins at 11:00 a.m. from the Korth Tennis Complex.
