Reno, NV - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team won its 14th match of the season today in against the No. 61 Nevada Wolf Pack. The Gaels won the competition 4-2. The No. 68 Saint Mary's squad defeated its third ranked opponent this season. Saint Mary's finished the month of March with a 7-1 record and improves their overall record to 14-1.
The competition got underway with doubles. The Gaels took the doubles point. Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath dropped a tough match by the score of 8-0. Nienke Strijbis and Femke Strijbis won their doubles match by a score of 8-2. The freshman twins won their 10th match doubles match of the season and improved to 10-1 on the season. Marah Calvo and Erin Young solidified the Gaels doubles point as they won a close doubles match by a score of 9-7. The two improved to 8-1 as a doubles pair this season.
With Saint Mary's up 1-0, Young gave the Gaels their second point when she won her match in straight sets. Young did not give up a single game, winning her match 6-0, 6-0. Young has gone 10-2 in her last twelve matches.
Calvo won her fifteenth straight match in Gael uniform today. She defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Lambert dropped a tough match 7-5, 7-6. Lambert, the reigning WCC player of the month for February, finished March with a 5-3 record. Hoath dropped a tough match 6-1, 4-6, 1-0.
Femke Strijbis recorded the game winning point for the Gaels. She won her match 6-4, 6-2. Femke has won four straight singles matches. Nienke Strijbis won in the middle of her match when the Gaels had won the completion 4-2. Her match was not finished. This gave the Gaels a final lead of 4-2.
Saint Mary's will hit the road for two matches this week. The Gaels will play WCC opponent Pepperdine on April 3 and then face UC Irvine on April 4.
