Irvine, CA -- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team dropped just its third match today when they faced off against the No. 37 UC Irvine Anteaters. The Anteaters won a close match against the No. 59 Gaels by a final score of 4-3. The Gaels are currently 15-3 on the season with all three loses coming to top 40 teams.
The Gaels dropped the doubles point. Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath dropped a close match 8-6. Femke Strijbis and Nienke Strijbis fell 8-4 in their match. Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza won their doubles match 8-6.
With the Anteaters up 1-0, Calvo tied the competition by winning her match 6-2, 6-3. She improved to 15-1 on the season. UC Irvine took the 2-1 lead when Nienke Strijbis lost her match 6-2, 6-3. Erin Young tied the competition at 2-2 when she won her match in straight sets 6-6, 6-2. The Anteaters would retake the lead 3-2 when they defeated Hoath 6-2, 7-5.
Lambert would tie the competition at 3-3 when she won her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. With the match tied the Anteaters won the fourth and final point in a close match that featured Femke Strijbis and Clare Fermin. Fermin won the match 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
The Gaels return to action for their final home match of the season against WCC opponent San Francisco. The Gaels defeated the USF Dons 6-1 in their last meeting. The match will be held on April 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the Korth Tennis Complex.
