Malibu, Calif. - In its last regular season match, the No. 11 Pepperdine women's tennis team handed No. 45 Florida International a 5-2 defeat Friday afternoon on Senior Day at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The Golden Panthers dropped to 15-3 on the season, while the Waves improved to 17-3 as they snapped FIU's 13-match win streak.
In doubles, the No. 22 Wave duo of Eva Dickes and Bianca Dulgheru easily put away Egle Petrauskaite and Shilla D'Armas 8-1. Caroline Raba and Natalie Braverman clinched the doubles point for Pepperdine as the pair defeated Courtney Johnson and Bruna Discordia 8-5. At court one, No. 29 Nikkita Fountain and Paula Zabala upset No. 21 Wave duo of Sylvia Kosakowski and Merve Asimgil 8-5.
The Golden Panthers picked up a point at court three after Raba retired due to injury, but the Waves received three straight wins from Braverman, Kosakowski and Asimgil to clinch the match.
Seniors Braverman and Asimgil picked up wins in their last regular season match defeating Fountain 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Desanka Jovanovic 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6, respectively. At No. 2, Kosakowski defeated D'Armas 6-4, 6-4.
No. 85 Zabala took the first set over No. 25 Dulgheru, 7-5, but the Wave rebounded with a 6-1 win in the second set to force the match to a tiebreaker. The Waves looked on as Dulgheru confidently recorded the win, 10-7.
Pepperdine is back in action when it competes at the West Coast Conference Championships from April 21-23 in Santa Clara, Calif.
