Malibu, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team played in the first round of the WCC Championship Tournament earlier today. The Gaels entered the conference tourney with a seeding of No. 2. Their opponent, the Santa Clara Broncos, was seeded seventh. The Gaels defeated the Broncos by a score of 4-0. Saint Mary's has not given up a single point to the Broncos in three matches this season.
Marah Calvo entered the conference tournament with a 17-1 record. She recorded the first point of the competition as she blanked Kim Daniel 6-0, 6-0. Femke Strijbis followed suit with a victory in straight sets. She defeated Myra Davoudi 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Hoath won her match 6-1, 6-2 over Stephanie Galainena. Erin Young scored the fourth and final point of the competition as she defeated Lindsay McBride 6-2, 6-1.
Aude Lambert and Stef Ordoveza were both in the middle of their matches when the Gaels has won the competition. They did not finish their matches due to the weather conditions. The bad weather caused the competition to go straight into singles matches, instead of starting with doubles.
Overall the Gaels did not allow more than three games in any given singles match today. The Gael squad has won their match on the opening day of conference for a third straight year.
The Gaels will return to action tomorrow when they will face the winner of No. 3 LMU and No. 6 Portland.
