Malibu, Calif. - In the quarterfinal round of the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships, the No. 1-seed Pepperdine women's tennis team shut out eighth-seeded Gonzaga, 4-0, on Friday morning at the Degheri Tennis Center at Santa Clara, advancing the Waves to the semifinals.
No. 13 Pepperdine moved to 18-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs concluded their season with a 3-21 record. The Waves will face the winner of the No. 4-seed San Francisco and No. 5-seed Saint Mary's match on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
Due to rain in the forecast, the WCC foes kicked of the conference tournament with singles. The Waves easily picked up four straight wins to clinch the match. At No. 2, junior Caroline Raba defeated Erin Humphrey 6-1, 6-1. Natalie Braverman recorded her 15th singles victory after the senior put away Sydney Lederhouse 6-1, 6-0 at court three. Registering her first win at No. 4, senior Merve Asimgil defeated Erica Moldenhauer 6-1, 6-0, while Lise Sissler blanked Carrie Schofield at court five, 6-0, 6-0.
Head Coach Gualberto Escudero was pleased to get his players back in action. "I know we've been out of matches for a while now, so it was nice to get started again and get a feel for the courts."
