Women's Tennis Earns Victory in First Round

April 21, 2006

Santa Clara, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team defeated San Francisco 4-2 in the first round of the West Coast Conference tennis championships Friday afternoon in Santa Clara.

The Gaels were the No. 5 seed coming into the match and knocked off the No. 4 seeded Dons. Saint Mary's went 3-0 on the year against the Dons.

"Obviously it was a battle," Head Coach Lisa Alipaz said. "Both teams knew it was going to be a battle, start to finish. I'm really proud of my girls for showing so much heart. I don't think the match could have gotten any closer. It was a fantastic effort."

The Gaels will next face Pepperdine at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at Santa Clara.

The match began with singles play and Saint Marys used victories by Aude Lambert, Kate Harden, Erin Young and Stef Ordeveza in order to pull out the victory.

With the Gaels up 3-2, Kate Harden pulled out a thrilling 7-5 victory to give the Gaels the win and avoid playing the doubles' point.

"It's definitely trickier, as both teams are used to playing doubles first, but I think both teams have to make the adjustments so I don't think it gave one side an advantage over another," Alipaz said.
