No. 20 Pepperdine Tops Long Beach State in First Round of NCAA Championships

Fresno, Calif. - The No. 20 Pepperdine women's tennis team defeated Long Beach State, 4-2, in a first-round match of the NCAA Championships at Fresno State's Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center Saturday afternoon, advancing to the second round for the sixth straight year.

The Waves (20-9) will face host and No. 14 Fresno State Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. The match can be followed live on the Internet at www.gobulldogs.com. The Bulldogs (21-3) defeated Army, 4-0, Saturday afternoon.

Pepperdine grabbed the doubles point against Long Beach State (17-9), posting wins as the No. 3 tandem of Jillian Braverman and Katia Sabate defeated Denis Liebschner and Rachel Porz, 8-5. The Waves clinched the doubles point when No. 38 Bianca Dulgheru and Sylvia Kosakowski bested Stephanie Bengson and Katy Williams, 8-6.

Caroline Raba and Anete Bandere gave Pepperdine a 3-0 lead after winning at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Raba posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jessica Weeks, while Bandere topped Liebschner, 6-2, 6-0.

After Dulgheru lost, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and Kosakowski fell 7-5, 7-6 in the No. 2 spot, Sabate clinched the match for Pepperdine after defeating Bengson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
