Malibu, Calif. - The No. 13 women's tennis team was eliminated from the NCAA Championships after it fell to UCLA, 4-0, in the second round at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The Waves concluded their season with a 21-4 record, while the Bruins, who improved to 15-6, compete in the round of 16 at Stanford.
UCLA took the doubles point after winning on courts one and three. No. 12 Laura Gordon and Riza Zalameda defeated the No. 17 Wave duo Merve Asimgil and Sylvia Kosakowski 8-4, while Ashley Joelson and Tracy Lin handed Natalie Braverman and Caroline Raba an 8-3 defeat at No. 3. When play was abandoned, No. 30 Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes were leading UCLA's No. 47 doubles team Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin 6-2.
After Pepperdine upset UCLA, 4-3, earlier in the season, the Bruins had something to prove and in singles they recorded three consecutive wins to win the match. Finishing first was No. 46 Lin who defeated Raba 6-1, 6-2 at court three. Joelson followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dickes at No. 5. Lumpkin clinched the match for UCLA as she defeated Asimgil 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.
When play was suspended, No. 22 Dulgheru was leading No. 21 Gordon 6-3, 5-4 at court one, while Braverman fought back to a second-set tiebreaker with No. 56 McGoodwin at No. 4.
