Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Kristen MacWilliam advanced to the semifinals of her respective bracket as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened fall play Friday at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Air Force Academy, Boston University, Gonzaga, University of Iowa, Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, Wichita State University, and the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay are all participating in the three-day tournament.

In her first collegiate tournament MacWilliam advanced to the semifinals of the main draw of the Gopher Singles Flight. In the opening round of the tournament, MacWilliam defeated Aschely Jurgella of Wisconsin - Green Bay in two straight sets (6-3, 6-2). The freshman advanced to the semifinals following a default by Minnesota's Jackie Claypool.

Also competing in the Gopher Singles Flight was GU's Courtney Lau. Lau fell to Rebecca Row of Boston University (6-0, 3-6) in the first round, before defeating Laura Bartingale of Wisconsin - Green Bay in two sets (6-1, 6-3) to advance to the semifinals of the back draw.

Three other Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw of their respective brackets.

In the Gold Singles Flight, Emily Anderson defeated Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli (6-1, 1-6, 10-6) before falling to Chrissy Svetlic of Missouri (6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-7) in the quarterfinals.

In the Minnesota Singles Flight, Sydney Lederhouse and Kendall Bates both advanced to the quarterfinals. Lederhouse defeated BU's Katarina Draganova (6-1, 6-3) in the first round before falling to Raquel Wagner of Missouri (6-1, 6-1) in the quarterfinals. Bates advanced to the second round on a default by Dunham of Missouri, advancing on to fall to BU's Elizabeth Corrao (7-6(6), 6-2)

In the same flight, GU's Erin Humphrey fell to Olga Elkin of Wichita State (6-3, 6-3), as well as falling to UWGB's Jennifer Tan (6-1, 6-3) in the quarterfinals of the back draw.

In doubles action, the team of Humphrey and Lederhouse put up a fight against Minnesota's Mikayal Rogers and Jenna Tellefsen in the Star Doubles Flight. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs fell to the Golphers 8-5. Also in the Star Doubles Flight, the GU squad of Lau and MacWilliam matched up against BU's Row and Yana Sadovskaya, falling 8-1.

Gonzaga's doubles team of Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates fell to Missouri's Erika Josbena and Amanda Pratzel, 8-2, in the first round of play in the North Doubles Flight.

The Gopher Invitational continues Satuday with the second round of doubles play beginning at 7 a.m. PST. Singles play will resume at 10 a.m. PST.
