MacWilliam Advances to Championship Match

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Kristen MacWilliam advanced to the championship match of her bracket Saturday as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team competed in the second day of the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Air Force Academy, Boston University, Gonzaga, University of Iowa, Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, Wichita State University, and the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay are all participating in the three-day tournament.

MacWilliam, competing in her first tournament as a Bulldog, won her semifinal match of the Gopher Singles Flight Saturday morning taking Boston University's Gabrielle Hernandez in a pair of close sets (7-6 (6), 7-5). The freshman will now face Rebecca Row of BU in the championship match on Sunday.

Also in the Gopher Singles Flight, GU's Courtney Lau fell to Jackie Richey of Wichita State (5-7, 6-3, 10-6) in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

The Zags' Emily Anderson defeated WSU's Torrie Browning (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the fifth place match of the Gold Singles Flight. Anderson will face Kayla Berry of Iowa on Sunday.

In the Minnestoa Singles Flight action, Gonzaga's Sydney Lederhouse fell to Jackie Sperling of Minnesota (6-3, 6-2) and will face teammate, Kendall Bates, for seventh place. Bates fell to Minnesota's Mikayla Rogers (6-2, 6-0). In the back draw of the consolation bracket, Erin Humphrey won her match against Erlyn Rudico (3-6, 7-5, 10-4) of Air Force.

In doubles play, the Gonzaga duo of Humphrey and Lederhouse defeated Air Force's Catherine Haycraft and Rudico, 8-5, in the quarterfinals of the back draw of the Star Doubles Flight.. The GU pair then fell 8-5 to Lauryn Grimando and Heather Harding of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the semifinals. In the same bracket, GU's Lau and MacWilliam fell to Grimando and Harding 8-5 in the quarterfinals, before defeating Haycraft and Rudico 9-7.

In the North Doubles Flight, the Bulldogs' Anderson and Bates advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket with a 9-7 win over Christine Abayan and Kelly Morgan of Air Force. In the semifinals of the back draw, the duo was defeated 8-2 by Minnesota's Jane Anderson and Ashley Schellhaus.

The Bulldogs will hit the courts again Sunday for the final day of the Gopher Invitational. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. PST, with singles action starting at 8:30 a.m. PST.
