Sept. 17, 2006

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Kristen MacWilliam earned a second place finish as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sunday.

The Air Force Academy, Boston University, Gonzaga, University of Iowa, Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, Wichita State University, and the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay are all participating in the three-day tournament.

MacWilliam, who was competing in her first collegiate tournament, earned a second place finish in the Gopher Singles Flight, after falling in the bracket's championship match. She was defeated by BU's Rebecca Row, 2-1, due to an injury default. In the back draw of the consolation bracket of the same flight, Courtney Lau earned a victory over Air Force's Laco in straight sets (6-0, 6-2).

GU's Emily Anderson captured a sixth place finish in the Gold Singles Flight, after falling to Iowa's Kayla Berry (6-3, 4-6, 10-6) in the fifth place match.

In the Minnesota Singles Flight, Kendall Bates placed sixth after falling to Jackie Sperling of Minnesota (6-3, 6-2). Sydney Lederhouse posted a three set victory over Minnesota's Mikayla Rogers (3-6,6-4, 10-6) en route to earning a seventh place finish. Bates and Lederhouse were schedule to play each other, as week Sperling and Rogers, but the coaches changed the match-ups so that teammates would not be playing each other.

In the back draw of the consolation bracket of the Minnesota Singles Flight, Erin Humphrey fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay's Heather Harding in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 10-8).

The Bulldog duo of Humphrey and Lederhouse earned a third place finish in the consolation bracket of the Star Doubles Flight with an 8-4 victory over Minnesota's Jackie Claypool and Liz Tusler. In the same flight, Lau and MacWilliam fell to Rachel Knight and Lauren Wilson of Air Force 8-2.

In the North Doubles Flight, the Zag team of Anderson and Bates fell in the third place match of the consolation bracket to the Golphers' Ida Malmberg and Lindsay Risebrough.
