Agalya Kokurina and Rika Mehndritta, both of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets Saturday as the Bulldogs opened the fall tennis season at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.
Participating in the three-day event is Gonzaga, Washington State, University of Idaho, Boise State University, Eastern Washington University, the University of Wyoming, the University of Montana and the University of Portland.
Kokurina advanced to the semifinals of the #1 singles bracket with straight-set victories over Washington State's Cekic (6-3, 6-3) and Boise State's Baum (6-2, 7-5). In the same bracket, Emily Anderson advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat over Dolack, before falling to the Cougars' Kamendova in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Mehndritta moved onto the semifinals in the #2 singles bracket with a three-set victory over Montanas' Bran (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) before defeating WSU's Selaru (6-0, 6-3) in the second round. In the same bracket, Bulldogs Kristen MacWilliam and Danielle Farmer dropped their first matches to fall into the consolation bracket before rebounding with victories.
In the #3 singles bracket, Clare Dodge defeated Montana's Souza (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) in the first round before falling to VanHollen of Wyoming (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) in the second round. Also in the bracket, Courtney Lau and Carrie Schofield fell into the consolation bracket after dropping their first matches of the day.
In doubles play, the duo of Anderson and Kokurina advanced to the quarter finals of the #1 doubles bracket with an 8-6 victory over Montana's Walker and Nowak. Also in the #1 doubles bracket, Gonzaga's Schofield and MacWIlliam fell into the consolation bracket after dropping an 8-4 decision to Washington State's Cekic and Gomez.
In the #2 doubles bracket, a pair of Bulldog duos advanced to the quarterfinals. Mehndritta and Farmer advanced to the quarters with an 8-6 win over Wyoming's Chaix and Nelson, while GU's Lee and Colton posted an 8-1 decision over WSU's Konomos and Casebier. Also in the bracket was the Zag pair of Lau and Dodge and a mixed team with Portland of UP's Fleckenstein and GU's Housinger. Both teams fell into the consolation bracket after their respective losses.
The Cougar Classic continues Saturday with doubles play beginning at 9 a.m.
