Mehndiratta Advances To Finals At Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Rika Mehndiratta, a freshman on the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, advanced to the finals of the #2 singles bracket Saturday at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.

Participating in the three-day event is Gonzaga, Washington State, University of Idaho, Boise State University, Eastern Washington University, the University of Wyoming, the University of Montana and the University of Portland.

Mehndiratta advanced to the finals of the #2 singles bracket with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Ly of Idaho. Mehndiratta will face Washington State's Stefanova in the final round on Sunday. In the same bracket, Kristen MacWilliam and Danille Farmer both dropped their respective matches and will face each other Sunday. MacWilliam fell to Berger of Wyoming (6-3, 6-1) while Farmer dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Montana's Bran.

In the #1 singles bracket, Aglaya Kokurina faced Washington State's Burduli in the semifinals, but was unable to advance to the finals, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision. Kokurina will now face Kamendova of WSU Sunday for third place. In the main draw of the same bracket, Emily Anderson will face Sporndli of Portland after advancing by the virtue of a scratch by Wyoming's Lazar.

In the #3 singles bracket, Clare Dodge dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision in the main draw to Eastern's Levenberger while Courtney Lau fell in three sets to Portland's Jenks (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) in the back draw.

Allyson Lee and Katie Colton played for the Zags in the main draw of the #4 singles bracket. Lee fell in the semifinals to Wyoming's Brown (6-0, 6-0) and will now face Montana's Lehman for third place. Colton posted a straight set (7-6, 6-1) victory over the Cougars' Casebier to advance to the fifth place match, to be played Sunday.

In the #1 doubles bracket, Anderson and Kokurina fell in the quarterfinals to Griffin and Sporndli of Portland (8-7), before defeating Montana's Walker and Nowak (8-3). The duo will now play for fifth place Sunday. In the same bracket, but the back draw, Carrie Schofield and MacWilliam dropped an 8-6 decision to Berger and VanHollen of Wyoming before falling 8-5 to Irimescu and Siwa of Idaho.

Mehndiratta and Farmer advanced to the finals of the main draw of the No. 2 singles bracket with a 9-7 victory over Montana's Moyse and Dantzler before downing Portland's Gullikson and Jenks 9-8 in the semifinals. The Bulldog duo of Lee and Colton fell in the quarterfinals of the same draw with an 8-4 loss to Montana's Souza and Lehman before defeating Eastern's Berger and Levenberger 8-0 for the right to place for fifth place Sunday. Also in the #2 doubles, Gonzaga's Lau and Dodge defeated a duo of Portland's Fleckenstein and Gonzaga's Housinger by virtue of a scratch before defeating Konomos and Casebier of Washington State 8-3.

The Cougar Classic wraps up Sunday with doubles play beginning at 9 a.m.
