Sept. 23, 2006

CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University's doubles team of Erin Humphrey and Sydney Lederhouse advanced to the semifinals of the doubles flight Saturday as the GU women's tennis team competed in second day the Red Lion Invitational hosted by Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.

Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, University of Idaho, University of Montana, University of Portland and Lewis-Clark State College are all competing in the tournament.

The duo of Humphrey and Lederhouse advanced to the semifinals after posting two wins Saturday. The pair first won a close match between Rachel Berger and Kerstyn Dolack of Eastern Washington, 9-7 in the round of 16. The twosome then posted a win in the quarterfinals over Eastern's Amanda Mankovitz and Illiana Petrova, 8-4.

In other doubles action, Gonzaga's duos of Kimberly Aigner and Katie Colton, Kristen MacWilliam and Courtney Lau, and Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates, all fell in the round of 16.

The Bulldogs' Emily Anderson posted a win in the round of 16 of the main draw of the first flight singles. Anderson defeated Montana's Cheyne Ursich (6-1, 6-1) in the round of 16, before falling to Patricia Ruman of Idaho in three sets (7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4) in the quarterfinals.

Also in the main draw of the first flight singles, Lederhouse fell to Liz Walker of Montana in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the round of 16.

In the consolation bracket of the first flight singles, Aigner advanced to quarterfinals with a close two set victory over EWU's Claudia Gonzales (7-6(2), 7-5). The freshman was unable to advance out of the quarterfinals though, falling to LCSC's Maria Resende due to a default because of injury.

The Zags' Colton, Lau, Carrie Schofield and Bates all fell in the third round of the consolation of the first flight singles.

GU's Kelley Bergen advanced to the championship round of the second flight singles with a quarterfinal victory over Aragones of Eastern (6-1, 6-0) and then ultimately advanced to the championships with a victory by default in the semifinal round. In the same flight, newcomer Ashton Aguilar fell to Peck of LCSC (6-3, 6-3) in the quarterfinals.
