Kokurina Advances To Semifinals Of GU/EWU Classic

Aglaya Kokurina, of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, advanced to the semifinals of the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington University Invitational Saturday on Eastern Washington's campus in Cheney, Wash.

Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, the University of Idaho, the University of Montana and Lewis-Clark State College are all participating at the three-day tournament.

Kokurina earned the right to play in the semifinals, which will be played Sunday, by posting a pair of wins Saturday. Kokurina advanced to the quarterfinals will a three-set (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) victory over Mankovits of Eastern Washington. In the quarterfinal round, she posted a straight-set win over Eastern's Dolack (6-3, 6-3).

In the back draw of the main bracket, Carrie Schofield advanced to the semifinals with a victory, due to injury, over Mankovits.

Multiple Bulldogs posted victories in the consolation of the singles bracket, including Clare Dodge, who advanced to the semifinal round. Dodge posted victories over the Eagles' Aragones (6-0, 6-1) and Montana's Moyse (6-4, 7-6, 1-0) in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively. Laura Housinger also posted a win in the bracket, defeating LCSC's Smedley by virtue of a withdraw before falling to Kirch of Idaho (6-2, 7-6) in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, the Gonzaga duos of Emily Anderson and Kokurina as well as Danielle Farmer and Rika Mehndiratta both advanced to the semifinals, but were unable able to move on to the championship match. Anderson and Kokurina defeated Peck and Smedley of LCSC (8-0) in the quarterfinals before falling in a close 9-8 match to Eastern's Knox and Mankovits in the semifinals. Farmer and Mehndiratta posted an 8-0 victory in the quaterfinals before dropping an 8-2 decision to EWU's Berger and Dolack in the semifinals.

In the consolation bracket of doubles play, MacWilliam and Carrie Schofield advanced to the semifinals with an 8-1 win against Bran and Ness, of Montana, before falling in the semifinal round (9-8) to Leoni and Ly of Idaho.

The Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Invitational continues through Sunday at the Eagles' campus at Cheney.
