Berkeley, CA - The women's tennis team started fall play down the road at the University of California, Berkeley. The host school, Cal, put on the Nike Women's Tennis Invitational, which included players from twelve schools around the country. The participating institutions were Arizona State (#18), Arizona (#42), Cal (#5), Fresno State (#14), Long Beach State (#40), Nevada (#66), Northwestern (#8), Pacific, Sacramento State (#56), Saint Mary's (#53), Santa Clara, and San Francisco. The tournament included 70 total players, participating in three different brackets in both doubles and singles. Play began on Friday, September 28 and continued throughout the weekend.
Saint Mary's action began in the Gold ITA Singles rounds, as senior Jessica Hoath fell to Northwestern's star newcomer, Maria Mosolova in the first round, 6-1; 6-2. Mosolova would go on to take the tournament title for Northwestern. Saint Mary's Marah Calvo would capture the win in her first appearance in the tournament, crushing Santa Clara's Myra Davoudi, 6-2; 6-1. Calvo advanced to the Round of 16, but was defeated by Cal's Christina Visico (#56), 6-4; 6-2. Hoath continued play in the Consolation round, losing a close match to Nevada's Florence DeVrye, 7-6(3); 3-6; 6-3.
In the Blue ITA Singles rounds Saint Mary's Stef Ordoveza defeating Fresno State's Elizabeth McFeets 6-2; 6-2. Junior Erin Young defeated Santa Clara's Andrea Kwong 6-3; 6-1 and in the same bracket the Gael's Feline Charlot was narrowly defeated by Arizona's Kati Orletsky, 6-4; 7-5. Ordoveza and Young continued play in the Round of 16, as Ordoveza was defeated by Arizona's Natalia Toporowska 6-2; 3-6; 6-2, and Young fell to Cal's Clair Ilcinkas 6-2; 6-2. In the Consolation round of the Blue ITA Singles Charlot was edged by Santa Clara's Carmen Pahm, 6-3; 6-3.
Kathryn Malec and Caitlin Aloia snatched-up two wins for the Gaels in the White ITA Singles rounds. Malec defeated Santa Clara's Meghan Madden 6-3; 6-3, while Aloia took down Pacific's Sasha Fisher 6-4; 6-4.
Friday's play wrapped-up with doubles competition in both the Gold ITA and Blue ITA rounds. In the Gold division, Hoath and Calvo were defeated by Fresno State's Danon Beatty and Vanessa Heroux 8-4. The Gaels brought home two wins in the Blue division as Charlot and Ordoveza defeated Fresno State's Bruna Paes and Elizabeth McFeeters 8-4, and Aloia and Young beat Pacific's Clara Schumacher and Sasha Fisher, 8-6.
On Saturday the Gaels took the court in the doubles competition, as Saint Mary's Hoath and Calvo dominated Nevada's Audrey Bardot and Florence DeVrye 8-2 in the consolation bracket of the Gold ITA. The win advanced the pair to the consolation semifinals, where the team was narrowly defeated by Arizona State's Jessica Leitch and Micaela Hein 8-6. In the Blue ITA doubles quarterfinals, Saint Mary's Charlot and Ordeveza fell to Santa Clara's Carmen Pham and Lindsay McBride 8-5, concluding doubles play for the weekend.
The White ITA bracket continued play on Saturday, as the Gael's Caitlin Aloia participated in the semifinal round. Aloia lost to Santa Clara's Courtney Hull 6-0; 7-5 in the match-up. Kathryn Malec, Jessica Hoath, Erin Young, and Marah Calvo extended competition on Saturday, participating in the ITA Singles Round Robin. Head coach Lisa Alipaz was pleased with the Gaels play in Round Robin competition, as Malec defeated Fresno State's Elizabeth McFeeters 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(10-30), Hoath posted a big win over Northwestern's Lauren Lui (#83), 1-6; 6-3; 6-4, Young took down Long Beach State's Jessica Weeks 6-3; 6-2, and Calvo lost a tough match to Northwesterns Nazlie Ghazal.
The Gaels continue Fall action when they host the SMC Invitational on Friday-Sunday, October 12-14. Play will begin at 8:30 AM on Friday and continue until the finals at 12:00 PM on Sunday afternoon.
