Strong Showing For Lions

    Moraga, CA (Oct. 15) - Loyola Marymount junior Pavla Mesterova won the Women's A Singles draw at the 2006 Saint Mary's College Invitational on Sunday, defeating Stanford's Lindsay Burdette in three sets. The Lions had a strong showing overall in the tournament that concluded on Sunday in Moraga.

    Mesterova earned a 6-3 win in the first set but fell 6-4 in the second to set-up the final set. Mesterova ran away with it, 6-1. It is Mesterova's fist tournament win as a Lion as the 51st ranked player in the nation is 4-0 on the season.

    Mesterova run to the finals started with a bye in the Round of 32 and then a 6-4, 6-2 win over San Francisco's Camile Pamart in the Round of 16. In the Quarterfinals she defeated Nevada's Caroline Baily, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

    In the semifinals Mesterova earned one of the more thrilling matches of the weekend, defeating Nevada's Maria Mizyuk, the No. 3 seed in the tournament. After falling 6-2 in he first, Mesterova came back to send the match to a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. She then battled to a tiebreaker win in the third, 7-6 (3).

    In Women's A Doubles, Mesterova and senior Tamara Tanner paired together and were the three seed in the field. However, they were upset 8-4 by Nevada's Alice Hall and Fiorella Velez. There is an upside as they went on to the win the Consolation Bracket.

    They defeated a team from San Jose State 8-1 to advance to the Quarterfinals and then had a bye to the semifinals. Mesterova and Tanner claimed an 8-3 win over a team from Fresno State and then in the championship they earned an 8-4 win over a team from Pacific.

    In Women's B Singles, Tanner had a strong showing, advancing the Quarterfinals. She defeated Joana Macedo from San Francisco 7-5, 6-0 in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, she defeated Clara Schuhmacher of Pacific, 6-2, 6-3. Tanner's run ended with a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Nevada's Ly-houng Dinh.

    Also in B Singles, LMU newcomer Maria Garcia-Planas Albert fell in the Round of 32 to Lindsay McBride of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-1. Garcia-Planas was not finished as she advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Consolation Bracket. She fell to Nevada's H. Masako 6-3, 7-6.

    The Women's C Singles saw Vanessa Lunardi fall on the Round of 16 to Kelly Hicky of USF in a three set marathon. Lunardi took the first set in the tiebreaker, 6-7 (1), but fell 6-4, 6-3 in the final two sets. She also fell in the first round of the Consolation bracket, 6-2, 6-2 to UC Davis' Y. Otaka.

    Garcia-Planas and Lunardi paired in Women's B Double action and fell in the Round of 16 to a team from Saint Mary's, 8-3. They then fell in the first round of the Consolation Bracket, 8-1 to another team from SMC.
