Moraga, CA - The LMU Lions had a strong showing at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational last weekend with two players and a doubles team advancing to the finals of their respective singles and doubles flights. Unfortunately, most flights were unable to be completed as inclement weather wiped out Friday's matches and scheduling difficulties prevented them from continuing.
Senior Pavla Mesterova was well on her way to her third consecutive championship, defeating a handful of top players to advance to the final round of the invitational Sunday afternoon. Mesterova began her singles play against Gonzaga's Aglaya Kokurina, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-1, and advancing to the second round of the Blue Singles Division where she then beat Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh (6-1, 6-0). Mesterova dominated her opponents, beating USF's Cecilia Gratian (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinals and Jenni Heinser (5-1 Ret (inj)) in the semifinals of the tournament. Unfortunately the finals would not be played due to weather delays.
Junior transfer Tina Razloznik continued her stellar play, winning four straight matches to reach the finals of the Red Singles Division. Razloznik defeated UC Davis opponent Anita Athavale (6-2, 6-1) and San Jose State's Silvana Dukic (6-1, 6-0) to reach the quarterfinals. She went on to beat Portland's Audree Jenks (6-1, 6-2) and USF's Jenny Sperry (7-6 (6), 6-1) putting her in the finals of the Red Division. This match also would not be played due to the weather.
In other singles play, Tamara Tanner fell in the first round of the ITA Blue Singles Flight to Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's (6-2, 7-5). She then played and lost to Svenja Arens of the University of Pacific (6-2, 7-5). Audrey Bulkley and Bliss Nixon competed in the ITA Red Singles Flight, both losing in the first round. Bulkley was defeated by Ashley Pane from Santa Clara (4-6, 7-6, 1-0, (10-6)) and Nixon by Jenny Sperry of USF (6-4, 6-1). Bulkley did not play again because of the scheduling complications, while Nixon moved to the back draw falling to Stefanie Doolittl from Portland. Freshman Jasmin Heckel played in the White Singles Flight losing in the first round to Clara Schumacher of the University of Pacific (2-6, 6-1, 1-0, (10-4)). She did not play again due to the rain.
Doubles pair Tina Razloznik and Jasmin Heckel swept through competition in the Red Doubles division. The pair joined-up to beat San Francisco's Emma Taylor and Nisha Dixit, 8-2, and continued to dominate the field going on to beat Saint Mary's Feline Charlot and Kathryn Malec, 8-5, along with Portland's Katie Kennel and Nicole Fleckenstein, 8-2. The Lion pair advanced four rounds only to have the final match cancelled once again due to the inclement weather.
Audrey Bulkley and Bliss Nixon teamed up to reach the semifinals of the Red Doubles back draw defeating Gonzaga's Danielle Farmer and Rika Mehndiratta 8-5 before the rain and scheduling difficulties stopped them from continuing. Mesterova and Tanner advanced to the Blue Doubles Flight winning their first match against UC Davis opponents Desiree Stone and Robin Guier, 8-2, but lost a close match against Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh and Jen Yen, 8-4.
Up next for the Lions is a trip to the ITA Regional Tournament on October 18.
