Senior Pavla Mesterova competed in the 2007 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio. One of three national tournaments of the tennis collegiate season, the event, hosted by Ohio State University, featured some of the best and brightest players in college tennis.
The weekend long competition kicked off the first round of singles play with Mesterova facing Duke's Ellah Nze. A tough fought match, Mesterova could not pull out the victory losing to Nze, 6-3, 6-4. She then moved to the back draw of the tournament where she competed against Cosmina Ciobanu from Notre Dame. A close match from the get-go, Mesterova lost a heartbreaker in a third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Playing in this tournament marks a first for Mesterova and for LMU, since it is the first time in her career, and in school history that the Lions have had a representative selected to play in the Indoor National Tournament. Her selection came as a result of her solid play in the ITA Regionals where she reached the quarterfinals.
Since the beginning of the 2007-08 women's tennis season, Mesterova has gotten off to a stellar start. She was selected to compete in the Riviera All-American Tournament followed by the ITA Regionals. Her play in the Regionals made her eligible for the at-large bid for the Indoor Championships this past weekend at the Racquet Club of Columbus. The at-large and wild card selections were made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships are the second of three national tournaments for singles and doubles during the collegiate tennis season. The other two include the ITA All-American Championships in October and the NCAA Championships in May. The Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women.
Up next, Mesterova joins her LMU teammates as they travel to Irvine, CA this weekend to compete in the UCI Invitational.
