The LMU women's tennis team competed at the UC Irvine Fall Classic this past weekend in Irvine, CA. The tournament saw senior Pavla Mesterova and freshman Jasmin Heckel go undefeated in singles play, while the duo of Mesterova and senior Tamara Tanner took all matches in the doubles. The UCI Classic marked the end of the fall season for the Lions who begin regular season play in January.
Mesterova, who is headed in her final season as a Lion and perhaps her most accomplished year, was once again unbeatable in singles and doubles play. After coming from the ITA National Indoor Championships last weekend, Mesterova continued her domination on the court. On the first day of competition she easily defeated UC Irvine's Clare Fermin (6-4, 6-2). The second day of the tournament saw Mesterova once again taking the victory, this time from Kim Van Ginkel of Northern Arizona (6-4, 6-2). She then faced UC Irvine's Rebecca Kwan in the third and final day of play and was handed another easy win, 6-2, 6-2 to go undefeated in singles at the tournament.
Heckel was the second Lion to go undefeated in singles play. On day one she faced and defeated Orsi Golovics from Northern Arizona in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). Day two saw Heckel up against another opponent from Northern Arizona, this time Leslie Vial was handed a 6-3, 6-1 loss. Heading into the final day of the tournament the 2-0 Lion faced New Mexico State's Pauline Zuniga winning the match (6-3, 6-2) for the sweep.
In other singles play, two Lions went two for one in the tournament. Tanner faced Jessica Broadfoot from UC Irvine in her first match, winning 6-3, 6-2 before losing on the second day of competition to Northern Arizona's Edit Suhajda in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-1). Bouncing back from her loss on Saturday, Tanner defeated Erynne Oki from UC Riverside in the final day of the tournament, 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore Audrey Bulkley defeated Anne Fagegaltier from New Mexico State (6-2, 6-3) before losing a close match the second day to UC Irvine's Ali Borowicz in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3). On Sunday, Bulkley took the victory in her final match of the Classic (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) over Stephanie Eusebe from New Mexico State to end the weekend two and one.
Junior Tina Razloznik lost in her first match (6-4, 6-1) to UC Irvine's Rebecca Kwan. In the second day of competition she was defeated by Erynne Oki of UC Riverside (7-6, 6-2). Razloznik did not play on Sunday due to an injury to her opponent Heidi Kaloi of UC Irvine. Razloznik finished one for one to end weekend play. Sophomore Bliss Nixon went 0-3 over the weekend being defeated Friday by Northern Arizona's Paij Porter (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) in her first match. She fell to Paulina Zuniga of New Mexico State on Saturday (6-4, 7-5) and UC Riverside's H.R. Espritu in her final match on Sunday (6-2, 6-1).
In more singles play, Senior Natalie Tejada was defeated by Aimee Oki of Northern Arizona on Friday (6-4, 6-2). She did not play on Saturday but faced UC San Diego's Taskeen Bains on Sunday in the final day of the tournament, losing the match, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Shawnell Russell fell to Regan Newman of Northern Arizona (6-0, 6-2) on Friday. She moved to the second day of the tournament and faced New Mexico State's Aleksa Costa, falling to Costa, 6-0, 6-0. Russell did not play on Sunday.
In doubles play, the Mesterova/Tanner pair swept the competition. On the first day of the tournament, the duo defeated Marks and Costa of New Mexico State, 8-4. They then faced UC Irvine's Fermin and Bartlett on Saturday sailing to an easy victory, 8-1. Going into the final day of the doubles competition, Mesterova and Tanner looked to take another win for the sweep. They did just that, shutting out the Van Ginkel and Vial duo of Northern Arizona, 8-0.
In more doubles action, Friday was a successful day for the Lions as three out of the four doubles teams were successful. Joining the victorious Mesterova and Tanner, Nixon and Razloznik defeated New Mexico State's pair of Eusebe and Zuniga, 8-5, as did Bulkley and Heckel who stole the win from Eusebe and Zuniga's teammates Juricek and Discordia, 8-3. Russell and Tejada lost, 8-4 to another New Mexico State pair, Fagegaltier and Rios.
Saturday was a harder day for the Lions as three of the four duos lost to their UC Irvine opponents. The pair of Broadfoot and Kwan stole the match from Nixon and Razloznik, 8-4. Fellow teammates Bulkley and Heckel also lost their match to the duo of Borowicz and Kaloi who barely pulled out the victory, 9-8. Russell and Tejada fell to Shih and Welliver, 8-1.
In the concluding day of competition for the Lions' fall season, the Lions faced doubles duos from Northern Arizona. Razloznik and Heckel teamed up to get an LMU victory, taking the match from Suhakda and Golovics, 8-4. Hasagawa and Oki beat Bulkley and Nixon, 9-7, while Russell and Tejada lost to Pinchbeck and Porter in a close match, 8-7.
For now, the Lions head back to the courts to prepare for their regular season opener on January 16 at USC.
