Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's tennis team concluded last year's season with a No. 14 ranking and now will open the 2007 season with the same ranking in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Junior Bianca Dulgheru leads the Waves in singles with a No. 22 ranking, while the team boasts two doubles teams in the Top 35.
Capturing the West Coast Conference title for the fifth straight year, the Waves concluded the 2006 season with a 21-4 record as they reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Despite losing two starters from last year including Natalie Braverman and Merve Asimgil, head coach Gualberto Escudero returns Bianca Dulgheru, his No. 1 singles player and Sylvia Kosakowski, his No. 2 singles players. Both juniors, the duo is ranked No. 21 in doubles. When paired up with newcomer Anete Bandere, Kosakowski helps the Waves to another doubles ranking as the pair check in at No. 33.
Also returning for the Waves is senior Caroline Raba, juniors Eva Dickes and Vanessa Dunlap and sophomore Alicia Poladian. Jillian Braverman, Natalie's younger sister, and Tania Rice join Bandere to make up the Waves' talented freshman class.
The Waves open their season on Sat., Jan. 20 against Cal Poly. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at Pepperdine's Ralph-Straus Tennis Center.
