SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The Pepperdine women's tennis team was picked to finish first in the 2012 West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the conference coaches. The Waves won the WCC Championships last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked out then-No. 2 Stanford.
Pepperdine tallied 59 points and four first place votes from the coaches around the conference, narrowly edging Saint Mary's, which garnered 57 points and three first place votes. The remaining two first place votes went to San Diego, which took third in this year's preseason standings.
Newcomer BYU and Santa Clara followed closely behind with 41 points and 39 points, respectively. Of the top five teams, four are nationally-ranked by the ITA in No. 26 Pepperdine, No. 32 San Diego, No. 41 Saint Mary's, and No. 71 Santa Clara.
Loyola Marymount took sixth with 24 points, while San Francisco, Portland and Gonzaga rounded out the coaches' poll.
The women's preseason all-conference team was distributed among four teams. Pepperdine claimed two on the list in sophomore Ale Granillo and junior Arianna Colffer. Granillo owned a team-best 8-2 record, including a tournament win at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational to open the year. Colffer made the 2011 All-WCC First Team last season and during this past fall, reached the singles quarterfinals of the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, CA.
Saint Mary's also had two players on the preseason list in junior Catherine Isip and sophomore Jenny Jullien. Isip was selected to the 2011 All-WCC First Team and came back this season to put up a 6-2 record in the fall, while Jullien became the top ranked Gael in the preseason ITA rankings, coming in at No. 68 after a 6-2 dual record in fall play.
The remaining two spots went to San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Santa Clara's Katie Le, both of whom were 2011 All-WCC Second Team honorees. Hoffpauir compiled a 14-7 overall record last season playing at No. 1, while Le earned a 20-3 dual record at the No. 1 spot for Santa Clara. Le is currently the top ranked WCC player in the national singles rankings, landing in at No. 37.
