Jan. 27, 2010

SAN BRUNO, CALIF. - The Pepperdine and Saint Mary's women's tennis teams were both chosen to win this year's West Coast Conference title, splitting the first place votes equally by the head coaches in the conference.

Coming off another conference title last year, the Waves are currently ranked No. 40 in the ITA rankings while unranked Saint Mary's garnered the same amount of first place votes in the WCC preseason poll. Joining the Waves in the ITA rankings is No. 59-ranked San Diego with 37 points in the preseason poll for a third place spot. Loyola Marymount was selected fourth with 28 points, just one point ahead of San Francisco. Santa Clara took sixth with 17 points, while Portland and Gonzaga rounded out the poll with 14 and nine points, respectively.

The WCC women's tennis coaches were also asked to vote on their preseason all-conference selections. Six singles players received those honors.

Two-time WCC Player of the Year San Francisco's Jenni Heinser led the preseason all-conference team with the most votes by the women's tennis coaches. 2009 All-WCC First Team members Saint Mary's Alex Poorta, San Diego's Juliette Coupez, and Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava were all named to the list after competing at the No. 1 singles spot for most of the year on their respective teams. Bhargava's teammate Alexandria Walters, a second team All-WCC selection last year, was also chosen as an all-conference member, while the Gaels' Anna Chikhikvishvili, last year's WCC Freshman of the Year, is expected to continue her successful collegiate career during the upcoming season.
