PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland women's tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over the UC Davis Aggies Saturday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots swept the doubles point and then earned straight set sweeps in three of the six singles matches.
Portland improves to 5-3 on the season, while UC Davis drops to 2-3.
The Pilots took the doubles point as the tandem of Katie Kennel and Christina Feyen cruised to an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position. Audree Jenks and Lindsay Griffin gave UP the point with an 8-5 win at No. 2, while the South African tandem of Jenna Tanzer and Megan Sporndli capped the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 1. Tanzer and Sporndli are 6-1 in doubles this season.
The momentum carried over to singles play, as Tanzer earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Griffin cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3. Sporndli lost to Desiree Stone 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, but the Pilots clinched the win as Feyen dominated the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-0.
Anna Gullickson capped Portland's scoring with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 18-16 marathon win at No. 6, while Jenks dropped a tough 5-7, 6-3, 11-9 decision at No. 5 to Andrea Phillips.
Portland returns to the L-P Tennis Center on Monday for a 10:30 a.m. match against the Idaho Vandals. Live statistics of the match will be available at portlandpilots.com.
