USF Women's Tennis Kicked Off WCC Conference Play, Shellacking The Zags

Feb. 20, 2007

Against Gonzaga - Our first home match of the season at Golden Gate Park and we used it to our advantage - the slick courts and the drums in the background were too much for the Zags to handle. We played well in doubles, sweeping all three matches to go up 1-0. Valerie Meise, recovering from an injury, played her first match of the season at #3 doubles with Joana Macedo and they easily controlled their match, 8-2. The French duo at #1 doubles won a close 8-7 battle and Sperry and Taylor found their groove for an 8-6 win. In singles, the Dons had a lot of depth down the line-up to carry them through and came up with quick wins at #5 and #6 as Oudomvilay and Macedo won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively. We played confidently at #1, 2, and 3 with Pamart, Taylor and Martin all picking up solid wins to take the overall match 6-1. "It was a great match to kick off conference play. We have a lot of matches coming up and hopefully each one will prepare us to play a little bit better for the following one so that eventually we will have everyone playing at their highest level, both mentally and physically."

Fans? Major sightings of alumni Jill Rader and Anna Skogerboe and her fiancé, Herb. We had great family support from the entire Sperry Clan, the Hickey's, the Laranjinha's and Macedo's, and the Somers. We had tremendous support from the athletic department with our new Athletic Director Debi Gore-Mann cheering and catching balls on the sidelines, Bill Nepfel, Blake Grenier and Mr. USF himself, Greg Sempadian, yelling "Go USF."

What's on Tap?

Serious, sense of pride match coming up this Friday in Bronco territory at Santa Clara - First serve slated for 2 pm at SCU. We beat them last year 4-3 in a major thriller. We need your support to defend ourselves against the Heckler's on the Hill fans down there.

For those of you who did miss out on a beautiful day at the park there is another one coming up this Saturday against UC Santa Barbara. Match time is 1 pm. This is a biggie as we beat the Gauchos last year on their home courts for our biggest win of the year. We would love your support at this one!

9 home matches to follow in March!
