Briefly... This Sunday, March 4th the Loyola Marymount women's tennis team will take on 52nd-ranked Boston College. LMU will spend another weekend at home as Boston College will travel to the LMU Tennis Center to compete. Play will begin at 10:00AM.
A Look at the Match-up With the Eagles... The 52nd-ranked Boston College Eagles bring a 5-1 record to the LMU Tennis Center this Sunday. The Eagles are 0-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. BC boasts two ranked players this week in 73rd-ranked Lana Krasnupolsky and 94th-ranked Szilvia Szegedi.
Lions Tally Two Wins at the UNLV Classic... In the first day of the UNLV Classic the Lions took on No. 73 Boise State. The Lions were not able to gain the doubles point and ended up falling at the number three four and six spots. Pavla Mesterova, Robyn Baker and Sladjana Kos gained singles wins for the Lions. Next the Lions competed against Northern Arizona. Singles play looked identical to the match against Boise State with LMU gaining wins at the number one, two and five spots. LMU won two of the three doubles matches which gave the Lions the doubles point and the 4-3 victory over Northern Arizona. The Lions went on to take the University of Montana by winning all three doubles matches and three singles matches. Loyola Marymount freshman Shawnell Russell made her first appearance of the season for the Lions against Montanta. Russell took on Alexandra Ulesanu of Montana but due to the format of the tournament, the match was not completed.
Perfect Play in February... Pavla Mesterova, at the Lions' top singles spot, not only went undefeated in the tournament last weekend, but has also been undefeated during the month of February. She has racked up a perfect 9-0 record. Each victory was in straight sets at the number one spot. Four of her nine wins were against opponents from ranked programs, including 35th-ranked Long Beach State. Mesterova is one win away from reaching the 20-win mark in one season at LMU.
Schedule Strength... The Lions will face a tough schedule again in 2006, with 12 opponents currently ranked in the ITA February team rankings. After already facing UCLA (12th), SDSU (52nd), Long Beach State (47th), UC Irvine (68th), and Boise State (75th), LMU will take on Oregon (36th), Pepperdine (21st), Florida International (42nd), Fresno State (39th), San Diego (62nd), Saint Mary's (75th), and Boston College (52nd).
Women's Tennis Celebrates 30 Years at LMU... 2006 will see the Lions celebrate 30 years of women's tennis at LMU. Head Coach Jamie Sanchez, who began the women's tennis program 30 years ago for the Lions, is spearheading the commemorative year. During the annual alumnae day last weekend, a committee met to begin the planning for the celebration to be held September 22-24. Alumnae involved on the planning committee include co-chairwomen Julie Hladik Reid '02 and Amy Okum Garrity '93, Peggy Reilly '80, Lia Bunker Green '98, Amy Labetich Lane '99, and Erin Sanchez '05. Other alumnae who returned for the festivities included Michelle Rizza '80, Sue Wise '81, and Theresa Holden Ilgunas '80.
