USF Women's Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to Santa Clara; Bounces Back for a Big Win Against UC Santa Barbara

March 1, 2007

(San Francisco, CA) - USF Women's Tennis Head Coach Hilary Somers fills us in on last week's action and upcoming matches.

Against the Broncos: In Santa Clara land we couldn't come up with the win. It was a battle; we put all our heart into and competed well but couldn't pull it out, losing 4-3. We were playing without our usual #2 Emma Taylor and #4 Jenny Sperry due to injuries. We lost the doubles point with 3 very close nail biters, all 8-6, but only won one of the three matches pulling off #3 doubles with the duo of Macedo and Meise. We then had big wins from Pamart at #1, Martin and Oudomvilay then came up big with solid victories at #2 and #3 as they played higher than usual. We couldn't come up with a fourth singles win to pull it off. It came down to the wire with both Macedo's match and Dixit's match at #4 and #6 respectively, but we couldn't close out either of the three set matches. It was a tough day to play down in Bronco land without two of our usual starters, but we sure played with a lot of heart to nearly pull off the win. We will get them later in the season.

Against the Gauchos: We couldn't pull off the doubles point, but then came ROARING BACK to win four singles matches to leave Santa Barbara stunned for a long van ride home. We took the match 4-3. We had strong wins from Martin at #2 pulling out a tight two setter, Oudomvilay, who usually plays #5, won in three sets at #3 to a very solid opponent, and Macedo bounced back so strong after a tough loss the day before at Santa Clara to play her best match of the season so far, winning in two sets against UCSB. Freshman Nisha Dixit, playing in only her second match as a Don, played a smart match to win at #6 singles. It was a great day for us to pull off a win like this after a tough conference loss the day before and having three key players out with serious injuries. This is the most I have carried on the team, 12 players, and boy am I thankful for having 12. With the seriousness of our injuries we will just move forward with each match and play as hard as we can. I am extremely proud of the team right now for really stepping up and being confident.

Fans? Sightings of alumni Michelle Duncan and her bo. We had great family support from the the Hickey's, the Laranjinha's, and the Somers. Yvonne Gomez and David Robinson were also tough enough to brave the elements. Only the toughest fans survived last Saturday at Golden Gate Park with rain and wind in the air. We use those home courts to our advantage - no doubt about that.

What's on Tap? The 9 home matches in March are upon us! Starting with the Saint Mary's Gaels coming over to GG Park today at 1:30 pm. We hope to end Saint Mary's winning streak of 7 matches. We play Univ of Nevada, Reno on Saturday at 11 am and Loyola Marymount Sunday at 11 am.And guess what???? The weather is supposed to be sunny and warm this weekend. Take advantage of it. Bring out a picnic and come cheer us on with the drums going in the background. It will be fun!
