Toreros Prepare to Host USD Invitational

The University of San Diego plays host to three nationally-ranked teams this weekend in the annual USD Invitational. St. Mary's, Southern Methodist and South Florida will make their way to USD's West Tennis Courts for a weekend of high-energy, fast paced women's tennis.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Friday March 10
9:00 a.m. - St. Mary's vs. S. Florida
1:30 p.m. - USD vs. Southern Methodist

Saturday March 11
9:00 a.m. - St. Mary's vs. Southern Methodist
1:30 p.m. - USD vs. S. Florida

Sunday March 12
9:00 a.m. - Southern Methodist vs. S. Florida
1:30 p.m. - USD vs. St. Mary's

TOREROS IN THE RANKINGS: After a 6-1 victory over then-38th ranked Washington, the Toreros made a huge leap in the ITA/Fila Collegiate Rankings this week. San Diego previously held the No. 62 spot but jumped up to No. 44 after defeating the Huskies. Senior Emma Murphy holds a national ranking of 100 on a Torero team that is currently 5-3 on the season.

SCOUTING ST. MARY'S: St. Mary's, ranked 56th in the nation, is coming off a 6-1 victory over WCC rival San Francisco. The Gaels own a 5-3 record and are a riding a four-game winning streak as they enter this weekend's tournament.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN METHODIST: The Mustangs made a huge leap in the national rankings after pulling off an upset over No. 30 Purdue. SMU received a ranking of No. 46, their highest ranking since January 11, 2005 when they came in at No. 44 on the charts. They are currently 7-4 on the season.

SCOUTING S. FLORIDA: S. Florida comes into this weekend's competition with a national ranking of 61. Most recently, the Bulls took a 5-2 victory over Yale and now stand at 7-3 on the season. Sophomore Courtney Vernon is ranked 38th in the nation and is currently undefeated at the No. 2 spot with a record of 9-0. Teammate Liz Cruz ranks it at No. 69 and Neyssa Etienne is currently 53rd in the nation. Etienne and doubles partner Gabriela Duch rank 12th in the nation in doubles.

HOME SWEET HOME: USD will remain at home for two matches following this weekend's tournament. Wisconsin comes to the USD West Tennis Courts on Friday, March 17 for a 1:30 p.m. match, followed by a 10:00 a.m. match versus Kansas State on Sunday, March 19.
