SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- West Coast Conference men's and women's tennis teams will host the second annual WCC Youth Tennis Festival, in partnership with Harper for Kids, on Tuesday, April 24 from 4:30-5:30 PM at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, CA. The festival will serve as an opportunity for WCC student-athletes and coaches to engage with youth from the San Diego community before kicking off the 2012 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships, presented by the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education.
"The WCC Youth Tennis Festival is a significant part of our mission to connect with the communities in which we host our conference championships," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "The engagement and enthusiasm of our student-athletes and coaches has made the festival a great event that we hope to continue each year at the WCC Tennis Championships."
The festival is a free, hour-long event, open to all youth between the ages of 6-12, and not limited to those with a tennis background. Depending on skill level, youth will be exposed to tennis fundamentals, exercises, games and the opportunity to rally against collegiate tennis players. In addition, coaches and players will speak to the participants about Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success, administered by Harper for Kids, and teach lessons about hard work, 100% effort, sportsmanship and cooperation.
One of the coaches that will be speaking to the youth at the WCC Youth Tennis Festival is University of San Francisco Head Coach Pablo Pires de Almeida, who puts on various tennis festivals with his team at schools around the San Francisco Bay Area. "Service is a huge part of our school's and conference's mission. It adds character to not only our players but also the programs we are representing," said Pires de Almeida. "Our program is extremely thankful to be partnered with the Harper For Kids Foundation, and we love bringing the tennis festivals anywhere we go to promote the WCC."
