Los Angeles, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount University women's tennis team is now ranked 67th in the nation after defeating 44th-ranked Oregon last week at the LMU Tennis Center. Sophomore Pavla Mesterova earned the team's first individual singles ranking of 2006 this week as well.
The new rankings will carry the Lions into this week's West Coast Conference Championships, which begin Friday at Santa Clara. LMU sits as the nation's 67th-best team, while Mesterova earned the 76th singles ranking.
The Lions were last ranked 75th during the week of March 14th after topping Boston College.
Mesterova has been the Lions' number one singles player all year. She has an overall record of 24-10 in singles action and has captured wins over six ranked singles players. Mesterova has also gained wins over players on six ranked teams, including now-top-30 teams Long Beach State, Oregon, and San Diego State.
At the Saint Mary's Invitational earlier in the season, Mesterova earned both the singles and doubles titles. Mesterova defeated Bojan Bobusic of sixth-ranked Cal 6-2, 6-3 to claim the singles title. In doubles play Mesterova teamed with Tamara Tanner to defeat the tournament's top seed of Bobusic and Licinkas of Cal 9-8 (7-4).
Mesterova and the 67th-ranked Lions now await their WCC Championship seeding, to be announced Thursday evening. Tournament play begins Friday at Santa Clara.
