Los Angeles, Calif. - After finishing in the West Coast Conference's top two for the third time in six years, Loyola Marymount women's tennis continued to improve in the national rankings.
LMU defeated then-56th-ranked San Diego to advance to the WCC Championship Match. With the victory over the ranked opponent, the Lions improved to a ranking of 66th in this week's national rankings.
"The team played its best tennis all the way down the lineup those last three days of the season at the WCC Championships," LMU Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.
Individually, sophomore Pavla Mesterova defended her singles ranking with impressive performances against other ranked competition at the WCC Championships. She is ranked 83rd in this week's rankings.
For this first time this season, the Lions also have a ranked doubles duo, as Mesterova and partner Robyn Baker are ranked 56th in the nation.
Despite the Lions' young lineup, regularly playing two freshmen and one sophomore, LMU etched its way into the all-time record book.
The Lions' lone senior in Patrycia Hubl finishes her LMU tenure seventh all-time in career singles victories with an overall record of 68-50.
"Patrycia joined our team as a freshman the year after we won the WCC title in 2002," Sanchez said. "Each year, she's tried to get the team back to the WCC finals. She accomplished her goal as a senior, and our trip to the finals can be largely credited to her leadership."
In addition to her national singles ranking, Mesterova also landed in the Lion record book. Her record of 25-10 at the Lions' No.1 spot ranked her ninth all-time in single season victories. She also ranks sixth all-time in season winning percentage, after posting a .714 mark.
As a team, the Lions finished 12-14 and in the national rankings after defeating ranked opponents San Diego, Oregon, and Boston College during the season.
