SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championships, presented by the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education kicked off today with first round action, featuring three matches at the Barnes Tennis Center as well as other sites around the San Diego area. The women's opening round featured No. 6 seed BYU vs. No. 7 seed San Francisco, No. 5 seed Santa Clara vs. No. 8 seed Gonzaga, and No. 4 seed Loyola Marymount vs. No. 9 seed Portland.
BYU faced San Francisco in their first round match defeating the Dons, 4-1. The Cougars swept doubles action and won three of six singles matches with two players bowing out when BYU clinched the victory. They advance to play No. 3 seed San Diego on day two.
Santa Clara took on Gonzaga to open day one of the championship and defeated the Bulldogs, 4-0. The Broncos took two of three doubles matches, taking a 1-0 lead and three singles matches. The last three singles matches were left unfinished when Santa Clara clinched the shutout victory. The Broncos will take on LMU.
Rounding out the day was Loyola Marymount defeating Portland, 4-0. The teams went straight into singles matches choosing to play the doubles match in the event of a tie. The Lions took four of the six singles matches, advancing to the next round to face Santa Clara.
The women will begin their matches at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
