#4 San Diego and #3 Santa Clara Survive Upset Bids from #5 San Francisco and #7 Loyola Marymount to Advances to Semifinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- The 2013 WCC Women's Tennis Championship continued Thursday with exciting competition as No. 7 Loyola Marymount mounted another upset bid, this time against No. 3 Santa Clara, in the Championship quarterfinal round at Barnes Tennis Center. The Broncos began the day with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions, but the Lions came roaring back with wins at Nos. 4 and 2 singles to even the match at 2-2. Not to be outdone, the Broncos' Delphine Rouvillois and Stephanie Skaras secured victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles positions to clinch the victory and advance the team to Friday's semifinal matches.

The #4 women's match featured a true test between No. 4 San Diego and No. 5 San Francisco. The Toreros took control early with a convincing, 8-5, win at No. 3 doubles, and a gritty 9-7 win at the No. 2 position to earn the doubles point. With wins lopsided wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, the Toreros increased their lead to 3-0, but the Dons came fighting back with wins by Andrea Ka (No. 1), Milica Hadzi-Tanovic (No. 3) and Sofia Holmberg (No. 2) to even the match at 3-3. The deciding point came down to a three-set match at the No. 4 singles position between San Diego's Marta Stojanovic and San Francisco's Marina Nikolic. After splitting the first two sets, 4-6, 7-5, Stojanovic took control of the final set, winning 6-2, and thus clinching the team victory for the Toreros.

Women's action continues Friday morning with semifinal action at 9:30 a.m. PDT. No. 3 Santa Clara will face No. 2 Pepperdine, and No. 4 San Diego squares off with No. 1 Saint Mary's.
