SPOKANE, Wash. - - Emily Anderson and Aglaya Kokurina, of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, have both been awarded All-West Coast Conference honorable mention accolades for the 2007 season, as announced by the conference office Friday.
The selections mark the first time in school history that two Bulldogs have earned all-conference recognition in the same season. Anderson also becomes the first Gonzaga women's tennis player to earn conference honors twice. Last season, as a sophomore, Anderson was named All-WCC honorable mention accolades.
Anderson, a native of Bradenton, Fla., posted a 7-14 record at No. 1 singles and a 13-19 overall singles record for Gonzaga this season. The junior posted a 4-7 record against league opponents including a 1-1 recording during the recent West Coast Conference Championship.
Kokrurina, who hails from Tashkent, Uzbekistan and transferred to Gonzaga from Michigan State University following the fall season, posted a 12-9 overall record, including going 7-6 at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore posted a three-match winning streak to round out the regular season, earning victories at No. 2 singles over the University of Idaho and twice against Eastern Washington University.
Loyola Marymount University's Pavla Mesterova was named WCC Player of the Year after helping the Lions tie for third place at the WCC Women's Tennis Championship last week. The junior is the first netter in LMU program history to receive the WCC's top honor for women's tennis, while Saint Mary's College's Lisa Alipaz was tabbed for WCC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Gaels to a program-best second place finish at the WCC Championship. Samantha Mouly became the first University of San Diego player to take home WCC Freshman of the Year honors, and four Pepperdine netters were named to the All-WCC first and second teams after the Waves captured their 19th league crown.
