SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Four West Coast Conference teams competed today at the 2012 WCC Women's Tennis Championships, presented by the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education for a spot in Saturday's final. No. 1 seed Pepperdine and No. 3 seed San Diego topped their opponents at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego and will face one another tomorrow at 12:30 PM.
Pepperdine defeated No. 5 Santa Clara, 4-1, in the semifinal round of the WCC Championships. The Waves won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Santa Clara won the No. 2 singles match with junior Alexandra Zaniewski overcoming Pepperdine sophomore Ale Granillo, 6-2, 6-4. The Waves then took the No. 1, 5 and 6 singles matches to seal the team victory and secure their spot in the finale.
San Diego and No. 2 seed Saint Mary's competed in a highly-contested match that lasted over four and a half hours. After dropping the doubles point, the Toreros won the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles matches for their chance at San Diego's first conference title in program history. Sophomore Anna Depenau clinched the match for the Toreros with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 victory over Saint Mary's senior Anna Chkhikvishvili.
Saturday's final will feature a matchup that mirrors the men's tournament bracket with reigning WCC Champion Pepperdine taking on San Diego. Pepperdine has won the tournament 22 times, while San Diego hopes to avenge last year's second place finish. Both teams are ranked in the ITA's top 25 with Pepperdine at No. 41 and San Diego at No. 71.
