WCC Announces 2011 Women's Tennis All-Conference Team

April 28, 2011

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference announced its 2011 All-WCC Women's Tennis Team and postseason award winners, as voted on by the conference coaches on Wednesday, April 27.

Saint Mary's senior Alex Poorta ended her collegiate career on a high note, earning the first ever WCC Player of the Year honor for the Gaels, while Santa Clara's Katie Le began her collegiate career by leading an impressive 2010-11 season at the No. 1 spot for the Broncos and garnering Freshman of the Year accolades. San Diego head coach Sherri Stephens earned her second Coach of the Year award after leading the Toreros to one of its most successful seasons in program history (18-5) and a runner-up finish in this year's WCC Championships.

The 2011 all-conference first team was selected by the conference coaches, based on overall season performance. All-WCC Second Team members were chosen based on the same criteria, plus performance at the recent WCC Championships.

This year's first team saw two new faces in Loyola Marymount sophomore April Bisharat and San Diego sophomore Laura Claus. Bisharat played No. 1 for the Lions in all matches but one and went undefeated at the 2011 conference championships. Claus strung together a 14-2 dual record at the No. 3 singles position for the Toreros, while recording a 4-1 campaign against WCC opponents.

The first team for doubles had a repeat pair from last year's All-WCC team in Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava and Marie Zalameda. The top pair in the Waves' lineup ended the regular season ranked No. 66 in the ITA doubles rankings with a 12-8 overall record. Teammates Ale Granillo and Khunpak Issara, the No. 2 pair for the Waves, also made it to the list after posting a team-high 9-1 record in dual play this season, good enough to climb to No. 49 in the ITA rankings. San Diego's top doubles pair of Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir rounded out the All-WCC first team after putting together a 10-7 dual record and ITA ranking of No. 71.
