SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Pepperdine University and Saint Mary's College women's tennis teams are set to represent the West Coast Conference in postseason play in the NCAA Tournament, the national office announced it Tuesday afternoon.
The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee has selected the 64 teams and 16 first- and second-round sites for the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. Per NCAA policy, the top 16 seeds are guaranteed to host if a bid was submitted and criteria are met, and matchups between conference opponents were avoided in the first two rounds of the championship.
No. 19 Pepperdine (17-8), the league recently crowned champion earned the WCC automatic qualifying bid after winning a program best 25th title. The Waves defeated tournament No. 2 seed Portland in the finals by a 4-0 score. Pepperdine will meet No. 55 Auburn (16-13) in the opening-round matchup that will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. PT on May 8 at Stanford's Taube Tennis Family Stadium. The winner will take on No. 14 seed and host Stanford or Stony Brook on Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. PT.
For the fifth time in six years, No. 35 Saint Mary's (14-9) earned a spot in the field of 64 and will face Northwestern University (15-7). The Gaels earned the nod after reeling off six of their last eight matches in a run that included a 6-1 victory over then-No. 18 Pepperdine in Moraga. Saint Mary's match will take place at the home of No. 7 seed UCLA, the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
First- and second-round competition takes place May 8-9 or 9-10 and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, where the 16 teams will compete for the national championship May 14-18. The event will be hosted by Baylor University.
