San Bruno, Calif. - The NCAA announced the 64-team brackets and 16 regional host sites for the men and women's 2009 Division I NCAA Tennis Championships. Pepperdine University, the 2009 WCC Tennis Champions on the men's and women's side, will be representing the West Coast Conference this year.
The first and second rounds of the tournament will be played at various regional sites on May 8-10. The No. 17-ranked Pepperdine men's team will be competing against No. 40-ranked California on Friday, May 8th at 11 AM at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Last year, the Waves made it all the way to the Round of 16 before matching up against then No. 4-ranked Georgia. Playing without their No. 1 player, three-time All-American Andre Begemann, the Waves fought hard but fell 4-1 in the team tournament.
On the women's side, No. 41-ranked Pepperdine will take on No. 31-ranked University of Texas on Friday at 10 AM at California in Berkeley, CA. In last year's NCAA Championships, the Waves lost to then No.10-ranked University of Southern California in the second round (4-0).
Both teams look forward to improving on last year's results in both the team and individual tournaments. The NCAA is expected to release selections for the singles and doubles tournament later today (approx. 6:00 PM).
Teams that advance through the first two rounds will then travel to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, TX, hosted by Texas A&M University on May 15-19.
