MALIBU, Calif. - The 2014 NCAA Team Championship bracket was released today and the No. 26 Pepperdine women's tennis team learned it will be playing No. 43 LSU in the opening round of the tournament. The Waves will compete in Berkeley, Calif. on the campus of Cal - one of 16 host schools.
Pepperdine is 18-4 on the year, winning a program record-tying 14th match in a row vs. Saint Mary's in the finals of the West Coast Conference Championship to punch its ticket into the 64-team NCAA Tournament field.
The Tigers are listed at No. 43 in the ITA rankings and are 14-13 after reaching the quarterfinals of the SEC Championship.
The two teams will square off on Friday, May 9 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The No. 4 Golden Bears won their first Pac-12 title and will host Fairleigh Dickenson in first round action on Friday as well. The Knights are making their third-straight trip to the NCAA Championship after winning the Northeast Conference Championship last week.
The winners of both duals will play on Saturday, May 10 in the second round.
Pepperdine is 25-30 in its 31 appearances at the NCAA Tournament and has made the championship field every single season since 1988 - 27 consecutive years in all.
The Waves are 5-1 vs. LSU all-time, but the teams have only met once in the last 10 seasons.
The winners from the 16 hosting sites will converge in Athens, Ga. to play out the remainder of the NCAA Tournament on May 15-20. The singles and doubles tournament will immediately follow on May 21-26.
The 64-person NCAA Singles Championship field and 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship fields will be announced via a press release at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.
