San Bruno, Calif. - Loyola Marymount's Pavla Mesterova was named WCC Player of the Year after setting the school record for winning percentage in a season and helping the Lions tie for third place at the WCC Women's Tennis Championship last week. The junior is the first netter in LMU program history to receive the WCC's top honor for women's tennis.
Mesterova concluded the regular season at 27-6, good for a winning percentage of .818. In her two seasons as the Lions' top player, Mesterova is 52-16 overall. Her .768 career winning percentage is also the best in school history.
The junior is currently ranked 63rd in the nation and was ranked as high as 52nd this season. This season she finished 19-3 in dual match action at No. 1 singles, helping the Lions to rank 64th in the nation.
Mesterova's Player of the Year honor was joined by her first-team singles and first-team doubles All-WCC selection. It is the second year for both of those honors for the Czech Republic native.
Joining Mestervoa as All-WCC first-team in doubles was teammate and senior Robyn Baker. Baker and Mesterova went 13-6 on the season, going 13-4 at No. 1 doubles. They earned the All-WCC honor together a year ago. In addition to her doubles honor, Baker earned second-team All-WCC honors, posting a 14-10 record overall and 13-8 in dual match play at No. 2 singles. Baker's season was highlighted by a win over the 16th ranked player in the nation.
Freshman Elrien de Villiers opened her collegiate career going 12-11 overall and earned honorable mention All-WCC honors. Joining her as an honorable mention selection was the doubles team of Serena Fermin and Tamara Tanner.
