Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's tennis team, ranked No. 20 nationally in the latest Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings, will face No. 44 Long Beach State in an opening round match of the 2007 NCAA Championships at Fresno State's Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, it was announced by the NCAA on Tuesday.
The No. 14 and host Bulldogs will face Army in the site's other first-round match. The two winners will meet to advance to the NCAA Championships at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia.
First-round action gets underway on Saturday, May 12, with the second round match scheduled for Sunday, May 13. Times are to be determined.
Pepperdine (19-9) earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after winning the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships. The Waves are making their 24th NCAA Championships appearance and 20th straight dating back to 1988.
Pepperdine has recorded first-round wins in each of the last five seasons and 12 of the last 13 years dating back to 1994.
Long Beach State (17-8), which won the Big West Conference Championships, is making its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fifth overall. The 49ers and Waves met in a first-round match in 2002 and Pepperdine posted a 4-1 victory.
Fresno State enters the NCAA Championships with a 20-3 overall record and captured the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title. The Bulldogs are making their 12th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Army enters the NCAA Tournament as the Patriot League's champion and brings a 15-10 mark into its opening-round match against Fresno State. The Black Knights are making their third straight postseason appearance and seventh in the last nine years.
