Six WCC Teams To Compete in NCAA Tennis Championships

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Six teams will be representing the West Coast Conference in the 2012 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships. Pepperdine, San Diego and Santa Clara will compete in the men's tournament, while Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and San Diego garnered spots in the women's bracket.

NCAA competition will begin in two weeks with the first round of action scheduled to set off on Friday, May 11. All three WCC women's teams will compete on that day.

The Pepperdine women (15-8), ranked No. 38 by the ITA, will make the trip up to Berkeley, and face Purdue (14-6) in the first round at 10:00 AM. This is the 29th overall NCAA Tournament appearance for the women's team and 25th straight. The Waves have compiled an overall record of 24-28 in the postseason, and have reached the quarterfinals on four occasions. A win on May 11 would put Pepperdine up against either host No. 8 California (17-6) or No. 54 Sacramento State (15-9).

The Saint Mary's women were awarded an at-large berth, marking the third consecutive season the Gaels have made it to the "Big Dance." No. 41 Saint Mary's (14-7) will open the championships against No. 28 Yale (19-3) at 11:00 AM at Stanford. A first round win would match Saint Mary's up with either No. 5 Stanford (17-1) or Stony Brook (11-7) on Saturday, May 12.

The San Diego women will square off with Vanderbilt (16-7) at USC's Marks Stadium at 11:00 AM. This is the second-consecutive trip to the NCAAs for the Torero women after advancing to the second round last season and 11th trip in program history. Host USC, the No. 5 seed, will face Fairfield (14-6) at 2:00 PM with the winners from Friday's play advancing to second round action at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 12.

On the men's side, WCC Champion Pepperdine (23-6) will host Green Bay (19-6) at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 11. The Waves have hosted the first and second rounds on six occasions prior to this year and are 10-2 when playing at home. The team's best showing came in 2006, when they were crowned the NCAA Champions. No. 26 Washington (16-8) squares off with No. 39 North Carolina State (20-9) in the first round in Malibu, scheduled for 11:00 AM on May 11. The winners of Friday's matches will meet on Saturday, May 12 at 12:00 PM.

San Diego (17-9) will take on Fresno State (20-4) on Saturday, May 12 at the UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center at 9:00 AM. Host UCLA (22-3) and will face OVC Champion Eastern Kentucky (19-9) in their first round match, and the winners of these two matches will face off against each other on Sunday, May 13.

Santa Clara (21-5) will make its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and will head to Stanford on Saturday, May 12 to take on Texas (16-9) at 9:00 AM. The winner of this match will take on the winner of Saturday's match between No. 11 seed Stanford (17-8) and Sacramento State (11-12).

After the first and second rounds on May 11-13, the remainder of the NCAA Tournament for both the men and the women will be contested in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on May 17-22.
