SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Championship Brackets were released today. WCC Champion San Diego will represent the conference in the men's tournament, while three WCC women's teams---San Diego, Pepperdine and Saint Mary's---will compete in the national championship.
This is San Diego's third time receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA Men's Championships. The Toreros (18-6) will take on new WCC member BYU (21-5) in the first round in Los Angeles, Calif. for a spot in the second round in Atlanta, Ga. The Toreros defeated BYU, 6-1, in late January.
The San Diego women's team (18-5) will join their counterparts in Los Angeles, Calif. as they battle UNLV (20-5) in the first round. This will be the first match between these teams this season. The winner of the match will remain in Los Angeles through the second round.
Pepperdine (14-7) will compete against Long Beach State (20-5) at Stanford, Calif. The Waves defeated the 49ers by a close 4-3 margin in the middle of spring season. The winner of this match will take on either host No. 1 seed Stanford or Illinois-Chicago.
Saint Mary's (13-9) was the third WCC team to make it into the women's bracket. The Gaels will face USC (14-7) in Berkeley, Calif. and look to avenge their loss to the Trojans earlier this season.
The men's and women's tournament will begin on Thursday, May 13. For complete brackets and schedules, please visit NCAA.com.
