INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Emma Murphy has been selected to participate in the 2006 NCAA Division I singles tournament, it was announced Thursday by the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee. The tournament will begin on May 23 and continue through May 28 and will be held at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
This marks Murphy's third straight appearance in the postseason tournament as she qualified in both 2004, where she retired in the first round due to injury, and 2005, where she advanced to the tournament's second round. Murphy, a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year, finished the regular season as the WCC co-Player of the Month for April with an overall record of 13-2 at No. 1 singles. She currently ranks in at No. 41 nationally and owns victories over top-ranked opponents, including Fresno State's Melanie Gloria, the nation's 23rd-ranked player. Since defeating Gloria, Murphy has ridden a 14-game winning streak through the end of the regular season and into the 2006 West Coast Conference Championships where she led the Toreros to a third place finish.
Murphy and doubles partner Lauren Perl have been listed as the fourth alternate in the NCAA doubles tournament. Together, the pair are ranked 35th nationally and were named the WCC Doubles Team of the Month for the month of March. They finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-4 at the No. 1 spot.
