Los Angeles, CA (May 7) -- Loyola Marymount junior Pavla Mesterova has been named the West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month for April after going 5-1 in the month, helping LMU to tie for third place at the WCC Championships.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Mesterova topped Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and WCC opponents Portland and Santa Clara. The Prague native's only loss in the month came against then-No. 3 ranked Melanie Gloria of Fresno State. To cap the month of April, Mesterova became the first LMU player to ever earn the WCC women's tennis Player of the Year award.
The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee recently selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships and Mesterova was been named as the third alternate for the upcoming singles competition that will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). The University of Georgia will serve as host.
Invitations have been issued to the top 64 singles players and an additional eight alternates also being named. If any of the original 64 players decline to participate, then the alternates are moved into the field of 64. Once the 64 spots have been filled, the draw for the tournament will be determined and released by the NCAA the week prior to the championship.
