Malibu, Calif. - The No. 13 Pepperdine women's tennis team defeated Wichita State, 4-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. Pepperdine will face No. 19 UCLA in the second round on Saturday at 3 p.m.
With the win, the Waves improved to 21-3 on the season while the Shockers' season came to an end with a 17-8 record.
The Waves kicked off first-round action as they picked up the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Natalie Braverman and Caroline Raba blanked Genevieve Spink and Jackie Richey 8-0 at No. 3, while No. 31 Eva Dickes and Bianca Dulgheru put away Ana Ines Exeni and Anna Egorova 8-3 at No. 2.
In singles, the Waves kept up the momentum as they won three straight points to capture the victory. Braverman was the first Wave to finish as she defeated Exeni 6-1, 6-2 at court three to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. No. 67 Sylvia Kosakowski topped Wendi Webster 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and No. 105 Eva Dickes defeated Egorova 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match.
Pepperdine upset UCLA, 4-3, earlier this season when the Waves were ranked 25th and the Bruins checked in at No. 15. Livestats for the match are available at www.pepperdinesports.com.
